Graffiti Without Vandalism: 5 Kinds of Amazing and Ephemeral Urban Light Art

Street artists are using simple glowsticks to produce an amazing variety of light art and graffiti. These tags, comics, creatures and shapes fade as fast as they appear, unless they is captured by time-lapse photography. Like traditional graffiti and street art, light art comes in many forms. Unlike most graffiti, however, there is no one to complain about being tagged!

Tags: Of course, an easy and straightforward form of light art is tagging. Glowsticks can be used to trace letters, and muscle memory takes over to create these shapes.

Cartoons: Creating light art cartoons is a little more tricky, and also brings more creativity into place. The above image (right) shows a clever integration of the figure with its context.

Creatures: Light art can also be used to animate or give life to inanimate urban objects, from garbage cans to post office boxes. Since the light fades right away, only those who see the photos get a glimpse of the secret life of these light art creatures.

Shapes: Light art shapes require particular attention to camera view and alignment. Pulled off right, though, they can highlight, reinforce or interpret an urban space in simple but powerful ways.

Other: Of course, the sky is the limit. The above image cleverly integrates the artist into the scene - he seems to be playing a game with his pet monster. Light art is easy to start experimenting with - disposable glow sticks that last for hours are only a few dollars. You can also see these and other images in their original context.

Wed. Notes
Use spray can with an embedded gyroscopic mouse that sends (bluetooth/radio?)to a projector. The movements from the spray can will be converted to a line that matches the gestures of the operator. It will also be projecting a background which the gestural drawing will be affixed to. It will be possible to add onto or go over other people's drawings.

SnapX will record the live performance of the operator vs. the background.

Nokia's N95 has an accelerometer in it which is similar to the iPhone, but hasn't been pushed by Nokia.
Check out this video that demonstrates the accelerometer. It seems that we could use the technology that Nokia has implemented into their phone to further our idea of a mobile version of the game.

Besides synthetic light sources, llumination is something also found in nature. From jelly fish to plankton to fireflies, nature uses bioiluminescence to create it's own organic light. It is the result of a chemical reaction during which chemical energy is converted to light energy. It is generated by an enzyme-catalyzed chemoluminescence reaction, wherein the pigment luciferin is oxidised by the enzyme luciferase. Its name is a Hybrid word, originating from the Greek bios for "living" and the Latin lumen "light".

How the Wii Works

"The Wii controller hides beneath its glossy exterior a number of cutting-edge technologies. The peripheral uses an accelerometer and a gyrometer to measure motion and tilt, and likewise utilizes both infrared and Bluetooth technology to interact with a sensor bar (placed near a television) and ultimately to send information to the Wii console."

Its use of motion sensors is accomplished with the use of Gyros, as Nintendo did buy a sizable amount of shares in the company Gyration, Inc back in September of 2001. But we do know it does use iMEMS® solid state accelerometers that detect motion by way of acceleration which were provided by Analog Devices, Inc. and/or STMicroelectronics. After much prying around at E3, I was told (by Nintendo's Developer Support) that there are three accelerometers at work in the Wiimote. There are also at least two accelerometers used in the nunchuck add-on to detect motion in it as well.

Like accelerometers, gyroscopes have been used for years in the automotive industry, where they are used to help stabilize cars so they don't roll over. Gyroscopes are also used in devices that require accurate balance sensing, such as the Segway.

Inertial Guidance System or INS is a navigation aid that uses a computer and motion sensors to continuously track the position, orientation, and velocity (direction and speed of movement) of a vehicle without the need for external references.

Why use the ADXL330? Nintendo used it in their Wii because...
“We selected the ADXL330 because its accuracy, small size, and extremely low power consumption were critical to the Wii Console’s design objectives and key for a wireless controller that will revolutionize the gaming industry.”

3-year-old start-up Invensense, are taking the technology a step further by combining three-axis accelerometers with gyroscopes, which measure rotation speed, to create even-more accurate sensors that could be used to improve photo stabilization and location and navigation services. Analog Devices, one of the largest manufacturers of accelerometers, has already supplied more than 300 million of the devices to consumer electronics makers over the past decade, but Christophe Lemaire, the company's marketing manager, said the market is set to explode as more of these components make their way into cell phones.

"My sense is we are on the edge of seeing an explosion of more and more devices using motion sensors, and specifically MEM (microelectromechanical) accelerometers," he said. "We are already working with all the tier one phone manufacturers as well with other third-party application developers to fuel this explosion."

Accelerometers--especially those based on MEM systems, which combine electrical and mechanical components--have been used for years in airbag deployment in automobiles. For those applications the accelerometers are used to detect the rapid negative acceleration of the vehicle to determine when a collision has occurred and its severity.

But in the last few years the technology has also been incorporated into personal electronic devices, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, media players and handheld gaming devices. Several handset manufacturers including, Nokia, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and even newcomer Apple have used accelerometer technology to provide some kind of motion-sensing capability in a handful of handset models.

Those are a few basic applications for accelerometers. They can also be used to help people operate their phones without using a keypad. The Samsung SCH-S310, introduced in Asia in 2005, uses a three-axis accelerometer that allows a user to dial the phone by "writing" numbers in the air.
